CHAPTER FOUR

Derrick went down the hall to the gym where the fire department had set up shop. They were putting up cots. Since the school was the emergency shelter, they had a hundred cots stored in a large closet in the back of the gym. Beside the cots were blankets and small pillows. Some of the kids had gotten out earlier with their parents, but those parents who were left were expected to share a cot with their young child. People were being sent down in shifts to the cafeteria where the school food service was busy preparing hot lunches for those who made it to the high school. The first aid squad provided coffee urns and cans of coffee to brew. Derrick’s bread and muffins went to the cafeteria to be doled out by the lunch ladies.

Volunteers were coming in wet and miserable. Almost all of his firemen were accounted for. They were taking shifts going out in the boats to the low lying areas to pick up anyone who didn’t get out in time.

There were at least twenty dogs and fourteen cats brought into the shelter. Although people weren’t supposed to bring their pets, he let it go. There was still concrete outside that wasn’t underwater where the dogs’ owners could walk them and the residents who had cats brought litter and trays with them and confined them to one classroom.

At about six o’clock, Steven came into the gym, still a little unsteady on his feet. Derrick ran up to him. “What are you doing out of the infirmary?”

“Don’t worry, I’m fine. Despite the goose egg on my head the doc says I only have a slight concussion so I gave up the cot to someone who needed it more than I did.” Steven sat down on the edge of the bottom row of bleachers. “Do we have many kids here? If we do, I can organize games for them.” Steven looked as if he could barely stand, never mind organize games for the kids.

“The other teachers and Mr. Bowers have the remaining children well in hand. The high school kids are helping ride herd on the younger ones,” Derrick said firmly.

“Is Josie okay?” Steven’s face crunched up in a frown. “What’s wrong with me? I didn’t even think to ask about her and she’s my student.”

“What’s wrong is you have a concussion. Josie’s fine. Bill Barton operated the motorboat when Ken and I came to get you. I’m sure Bill will come over and thank you personally, but Mary isn’t here. This is the second time Josie has done this during a storm and put other people in jeopardy. He’s going to have to do something about her fears. She should be seeing the school psychologist, if he doesn’t want to take her into Waco or Austin.”

“I’ve tried to talk to Mary about Josie’s anxiety last time we had parent/teacher conferences, but Mary didn’t want to hear about it. Now maybe she’ll listen,” Steven said in reflection.

It was nine pm and the storm was still raging.
